There is no Saturday training update for this week, because i didn’t go to training.

That doesn’t mean I missed out on my saltwater dose for the week, though; far from it. In fact I damn near spent the entire weekend in the water.

Last week I decided to open up my list of options for spending time in the ocean by doing my PADI Open Water Diving certification.

It was pretty amazing, and a lot of hard work physically, emotionally and mentally. In fact today is pretty much the first day since that I have been able to move around without having my entire body in pain!

I did pass, and I think the fact that I am used to spending time in the water was definitely helpful in that. I did find it was funny that I kept getting in trouble for “swimming too much”! The idea is to swim slowly and smoothly and use your legs only to conserve air and be able to stay down longer with the tank you have. It seems that with all the training I do to learn to swim faster for longer that I have a lot of trouble taking it easy!

Overall, though, the weekend was far from easy. We were building up and breaking down our own gear and lifting and carrying and packing and unpacking gear and tanks and weights. My back is killing me, my leg hurts from the lifting, my calves feel a bit like they’re shredded from so many cramps, and I have bruises and chafing from the harness and the weight. It’s literally taken me days to recover!

It was very much worth it, though. We got to the point where we could dive and see some cool things over at Shelly Beach…Rays and Port Jackson Sharks and Wobbegong sharks and blue gropers and cornetfish and all sorts of other things swimming around down there.

I’m so much looking forward to getting out there and doing some more diving. Apparently I’m happy in the ocean swimming, snorkelling and now diving!
